Glen Coffee Retires at Age 23

A lot of people are shocked that a 23 year old NFL running back would up and retire without injury. But in the case of Glen Coffee it does not matter. The former Alabama star will be taking his talents to a ministry near you this fall.

Some people have a higher calling than just playing sports. You can't get mad at this kid.

Cedric Benson Arrested for Assault

Cedric Benson Pictures, Images and Photos

Months after wrapping up his career best season and reviving what little career he had left, Cedric Benson is back in hot water. After the boating DUI you'd think he'd lay off the drinks some (allegedly). I guess he can blame it on the al-al-al-alcohol!
Cedric Benson has been arrested and charged with assault for an altercation at a bar on May 30, according to the Austin American-Statesman.

Officials say that Benson got into a fight around 1:50 a.m. with an unknown person inside a bar in Austin, Texas. He allegedly was being escorted out of the bar when he punched a bar employee in the face and then the affidavit says Benson spit blood from his injured lip at an employee. This surely won't help Benson get that new contract that he's looking for, and you can be certain he'll be hearing from the league office. He faces up to a year in jail if convicted of the Class A misdemeanor.

Lendale White Released

lendale white Pictures, Images and Photos

According to multiple sources, the Seattle Seahawks have let go of RB Lendale White. It seemed like he was primed to be a success after losing weight and going to the same system he played in college with coach Pete Carroll. Maybe it wasn't meant to be.

There are also some tweets going around saying that drugs may be involved:
LenDale White likely facing 4-game drug suspension, according to sources. Reasons for his release beyond that. More @ NFL.com and on NFLN
@JasonLacanfora
It was just a few years ago he was tearing up the Pac 10 and I was telling people that the New York Jets should pick him #4 overall SMH. (They did the smart thing and went with D'Brichashaw Ferguson)

RB Jahvid Best Declares

He hasn't played since that horrific head and neck injury, but California RB Jahvid Best has declared for the NFL Draft and will skip his last year in college. This is a good move for him. He has nothing left to prove, and is already one of the nation's more explosive players. The only thing scouts want to see from him are x-rays at this point....

Knowshon and Matt Make it Official

matt stafford best qb in tha nation Pictures, Images and Photos

Knowshon Moreno and Matt Stafford made it official today: They're headed to the league.

This is after Georgia's disaster season which culminated in an anti-climatic win over a Michigan State team that was way over matched. The Bulldogs were ranked #1 at the beginning of the season and touted presumably the best QB/RB combo this side of Beanie and Terelle.

Are they ready for the NFL game? Yes. There is not much either could do at this point to boost their draft stock any further. Knowshon is the #1 or #2 RB depending on who you ask, and Matt Stafford is in the running to be the top pick to Detroit.

Denver Whiffs on West Virgina's Steve Slaton

Post per Denver Broncos forums:

Steve Slayton Pictures, Images and Photos

The Denver Broncos traded a third round pick and more to the Minnesota in order to acquire the pick that turned out to be Marcus Thomas. Hindsight is 20/20, so a review would be unfair, but that pick could have been used to pick up West Virginia's Steve Slaton. Slaton, who finished sixth in the league in rushing yards also found the endzone ten times and added almost four hundred yards receiving. This, despite a sometimes shaky quarterback situation in Houston. From a Broncos' perspective, Slaton finished the season, a feat that has eluded Broncos' running backs in 2008.

To add insult to injury (or in Denver's case, injuries), the Houston Bron...Texans finished with the same record as Denver at eight and eight despite playing in a division which featured the AFC leading Tennessee Titans and the playoff bound Indianapolis Colts. Houston should have finished nine and seven were it not for two costly mistakes by Sage Rosenfels in a game against the Colts.

In the end, the Houston Texans have a thousand yard running back, the Chiefs ended up with Minnesota's pick from Denver and turned it into Jamaal Charles, and Denver is left a with defensive tackle with no sacks and a defense that has analysts proclaiming the team, the enver Broncos.

Ian Johnson All Time WAC TD Leader

Ian Johnson just scored his 58th career touchdown against TCU to make him the WAC's all-time touchdown leader. The guy he passed? Marshall Faulk. Impressive.

Knowshon Moreno, Matt Stafford #1 and #2 Overall?

Is it possible that the runningback and quarterback from the #1 ranked Georgia Bulldogs could be drafted #1 and #2 overall next year? It's very possible.

Moreno has proven himself to be in the top tier of underclassman runners. He is ahead of the likes of Noel Devine, Percy Harvin, and Joe McKnight in my opinion. Between him and LeSean McCoy it's a toss up for first back taken if they both happen to come out.

Stafford is one of college football's best. He doesn't have the resume' of Tim Tebow or Rudy Carpenter but he projects to a better pro at this point. Tebow comes from the Uber Meyer misdirection offense which produces statistical monsters, and Carpenter has been solid but not great at Arizona state.

If Georgia can escape the SEC and win a title this year these two young players may make noise in the next NFL Draft.

Jonathan Stewart a second round back? Dont count on it.

I recently saw a feature on ESPN in which they were predicting the NFL Draft on a team-by-team basis. Now normally I have respect for Mel Kiper and his draft rankings (predicting Jon Beason as a top prospect last year among other "gems") but what Mel had to say about Jonathan Stewart was appalling. He claimed that the Texans would not draft Stewart, but that is a moot point because he added that Stewart was not a first round choice!

I don't see how Stewart's surgery drops him out of round one. Especially since he posted a tremendous combine with a 4.48 40 yard dash while needing surgery! So he will be out for 3 months, who cares. Stewart is still the second best back in this draft.

Random Analysis

I'm going to throw out some random analysis on my behalf... which comes from watching mainly C USA games and ACC games... but I also watched every SEC game I could get which was a lot of Arkansas for some strange reason... anyways.. here is my analysis from how they play, not the combine.

I have come around on Matt Ryan. I do not think he is benefiting from a weak QB class at all. He took a team with lackluster talent and made them look real good every Saturday. He moves well in the pocket and finds the open man, doesnt force it.

Chris Johnson is my homer pick. Ive watched is maturity from a freshman surprise all the way to NFL Draft Prospect so I have to support him. Is an effortless runner, with elite speed, and has soft hands. Waits for his blockers instead of trying to outrun everyone which resulted in the most all purpose yards in the nation.

I absolutely love Mike Hart as a prospect. He doesn't fumble and is tough. Built small and compact and gets those tough yards. He benefited a lot from Long but no one will deny he was a quality back in college. May never be the man in the NFL but will be a great #2 man.

Darren McFadden is an elite runner who comes once every five drafts or so. Big and strong with a great stride and the speed to house it when he gets to the second level. Unreal stiff arm as well and breaks the arm tackles with ease. Put his team on his back against LSU and cemented himself as the first runner taken.

I think Limas Sweed is the next Plaxico. He has great speed for his size and has good leaping ability. A terror in the redzone with 20 career TDs and would have broke the school record if he didnt get hurt. Came to the combine healthy and I have him ranked as my #1 WR.

I saw a bunch of WVU and I will join the Schmitt fans. He is a bull in a china house. In other news, Slaton looks like kick returner at the next level. I dont think he is big enough nor quick enough to make guys miss.
Kenny Phillips is a first round talent. Sure he played not to get hurt, but he has the size, bulk, speed, and experience you look for in a future safety. A hard hitter and sure tackler. I dont believe any of the misinformation about him. I will admit he needs work against the deep ball.

Thats all I have for now.. Ill think of more guys I watched later.

UCF's Kevin Smith Prepares to Knockout the Competition

Here is a video of Kevin Smith training for the NFL Draft by boxing. Interesting to say the least. ESPN talked to him on First Take a few days ago as well. Maybe people are starting to come around on 24k.

McFadden for Barber deal?

As I stated a few days ago, the tuna is offically open for business. According to Pro Football Talk there is a deal on the table that is:

Rights to Barber, and either the 22nd or 28th pick, for the Dolphins' #1 Overall Pick.

In that scenario the Cowboys would select McFadden with the #1 overall selection. While I like McFadden a lot as a game breaker, Marion Barber is FAR more accomplished and is the 'sure thing' right now. I would not do this trade if I were Jerry Jones, but I know where this one is going...

Darren McFadden Handcuffed in Arkansas

mcfadden

This is huge news regarding the potential #1 overall pick in the 2008 draft. Darren McFadden was handcuffed but not jailed following an altercation in Arkansas. Apparently his mother is defending him claiming that McFadden was defending his younger brother. I have a younger brother as well, and I know I would defend him if someone tested him/us but you have to make better decisions if you are looking at being the #1 overall pick in the NFL Draft.

Hart, Brennan, and McFadden Bowl Out

Mike Hart

Mike Hart, Colt Brennan, and Darren McFadden all had subpar bowl performances which might hurt their draft stock come April.

Hart had over 100 on the ground, but his two lost fumbles on the goal line almost cost Michigan the game. He doesn't fumble it ever, so to fumble on the biggest stage of his senior season twice didn't help him.

Colt Brennan looked like a boy amongst men against Georgia in the Sugar Bowl. The speed of the D caused Colt to throw 3 ints and NO Tds, which is baffling in Hawaii's offense. The Brennan supporters beg us not to compare him to Timmy Chang, but after a game like that I don't know how good Colt can be in the NFL.

Darren McFadden didn't have a horrible game but seemed to give a lackluster effort. In what will be his last collegiate game had had over 100 yards but didn't even play the 4th quarter.

McFadden Beats #1

Has Darren McFadden reasserted himself as the #1 overall prospect in the 2008 draft? After the overtime upset of #1 LSU, the answer may be yes. McFadden put up his usual unbelievable numbers out of the wild hog offense which included 32 carries for 206 yards and going 3/6 passing with a Td. Dear Mike Shannahan, please get this kid at all costs. You blew it with Lawrence Maroney and Marshawn Lynch.. get it right this time! Travis Henry is unreliable!

That's my inner blue and orange speaking out, but yeah... McFadden is a beast.
